News: Adobe Flash Update Is Released, Still Waiting On Adobe PDF Patches…

Well, the Adobe folks were busy this week…  At least the Flash Player Vulnerability has been address for now…That is the Good News for the world of Flash Player users.

The BAD NEWS is that the Adobe Acrobat and Reader products will NOT receive their patch until the end of the month – June 29th 2010 is what I read.

Let's address the Adobe Flash Player Patch first, and get that vulnerability off your system.

You can check the version of you current Flash Player installation by visiting:

http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

There you will see a box that will display your current version.  If your version is not 10.1.53.64, you will want to perform the update if you are running Flash Player on Windows, Mac, Linux, or Solaris computer systems.

Adobe ALSO recommends that users of Adobe AIR 1.5.3.9130 and earlier versions update to Adobe AIR 2.0.2.12610.  You can read the full information on this security bulletin at:  http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb10-14.html

This Security Bulletin will also provide you patch information and download information on the following products:

  • Flash Player
  • AIR
  • Flash Prodessional CS5
  • Flash CS4 Professional
  • Flex 4
  • Flash CS3 Professional
  • Flex 3

For the Flash Player you can use the Adobe Flash Player Download Center.  I don't know about you, but I have No Use for McAfee products so I automatically un-check the optional McAfee Security Scan Plus installation.  There is such a thing as TOO MANY Anti-Virus products on a system.

Back to Adobe – The BAD NEWS is that you still need to be on the lookout for unrequested PDF files coming your way.  The hackers are still putting lots of time and energy into using this hole in Adobe Acrobat and Reader products to compromise your system!

Remember This Part:

According to an Adobe advisory last week it was noted that "deleting, renaming or removing access to the authplay.dll file mitigates the threat,"  which will resulting in a "non-exploitable crash or error message" when a PDF file with Flash content is opened.

You really need to keep this in mind as you surf and access the PDF materials out on the internet.  To protect yourself, follow this next paragraphs instructions on renaming the authplay.dll file…

The process to rename the authplay.dll requires that you FIND the authplay.dll file… Adobe said the authplay.dll that comes with Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x for Windows is usually installed at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\authplay.dll forAdobe Reader or C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\authplay.dll for Acrobat.

Until the patch is release, be on the lookout for rouge PDF files hitting your emails… and be very careful when downloading *free* PDF based reports.  I would *STRONGLY* recommend that those who are in the Internet Marketing realm pay close attention to their systems when accessing the many reports and free eBooks that present on the internet.  Be aware that you WILL receive an error message when the authplay.dll has been modified.  See the Bolded Paragraph Above  :-)

Play it *SAFE* till the end of the month – Make sure your operating systems are patched – Mac and Linux users too!  Windows folks should KNOW Tuesday June 8th was Patch Tuesday and patched themselves by now…  Keep your AntiVirus and AntiMalware software version current and be sure you check updates at the beginning of your surfing sessions.

And, please, Please, PLEASE Backup Your Data!  You can ONLY restore what you have BACKED UP!  Backup often!

What do they say?  An Ounce Of Prevention Keeps You From Booking An Expensive And Incovenient Computer Service Call!
